"Your Legitimate Human-Needs for surviving and thriving..."
What follows is a list of Legitimate Human-Needs – these are for environmental conditions, activities and experiences important for physical and psychological health. The purpose of this list is to stimulate your thinking about the performance and variety of human needs.
You may think that some of the needs don’t apply to you, or that some of them are redundant, or that there are needs omitted, or that the list is not categorized properly. That’s fine. In fact, feel free to add to, subtract from, combine, and re-organize the needs on this list. Doing so will be an excellent way to begin thinking about your own personal needs.
Legitimate Human-Needs PHYSICAL
From the moment you’re born, you need clean air to breathe. You won’t survive long without pure water to drink and nutritious food to eat. To these you can add the need for some type of clothing and shelter adapted to the part of the planet you inhabit. Other obvious physical needs are the need to rest and sleep regularly.
You also need to exercise your muscles, or they will atrophy.
Finally you need a certain level of security or safety to survive physically.
Legitimate Human-Needs EMOTIONAL
Less obvious, but hardly less essential, are your emotional needs – to love and be loved, to have companionship, to feel that you are respected, and to respect others.
You need sympathy and compassion from others, and you need to express your own sympathy and compassion for them.
When you do well, you need recognition, appreciation, and congratulations.
When you don’t do so well, you need forgiveness and understanding.
You need outlets for your sexual drive, a need that is physical on the hormonal level, but is a quest for intimacy and belonging on the emotional level.
Self-esteem will be enriched when these Legitimate Human-Needs are all met...
